Situated right in front of Kurotani’s historic gate in Sakyo-ku is Genroku Tatami , a workshop that has been operating continuously for more than 300 years. Established in 1690 during the third year of the Genroku era, the workshop’s lineage traces back to Hanbei Izumiya, who originally served as a temple samurai before transitioning into the masterful craft of tatami making. Today, this sacred lineage is meticulously maintained, ensuring that ancient techniques are preserved in an increasingly industrialized world.
