On November 24, 2025, we were excited to host our very first guests for our newly launched Home Visit & Mochi Pounding Experience in Shiga. Just a short, scenic train ride from Kyoto, this hands-on adventure offers travelers a truly authentic taste of Japanese culture from pounding sticky mochi with your own hands to tasting traditional Japanese meals prepared by the hosts.
This experience is perfect for families, couples, group and solo travelers who are seeking authentic Japanese cultural experiences away from the crowds, combining learning, hands-on fun, and delicious local cuisine in one memorable day trip from Kyoto.
Upon arrival, our guide welcomed the guests at Ogoto Station, holding a clear nameplate for easy identification.
At Honey J, we ensure every visitor enjoys stress-free, personalized service from start to finish ideal for families, couples, and international travelers.

Prior to the home visit, The family enjoyed a peaceful walk through Ogura Shrine, one of Shiga’s hidden gems. This beautifully preserved shrine is known for its history, serenity, and traditional atmosphere making it a perfect introduction to local Shiga culture.

With a knowledgeable guide sharing stories, historical insights, and local traditions, guests can experience Japan on a much deeper level, gaining a true appreciation for its culture, heritage, and way of life. This experience is particularly ideal for travelers seeking authentic cultural immersion near Kyoto, offering opportunities to actively participate in local traditions, connect with the community, and create lasting memories of a truly unique Japanese experience.
Inside the host’s home, The Stuart family engaged in warm and insightful conversations about life in rural Japan, an experience seldom found in typical tourist itineraries. This home visit offers a genuine glimpse into Japanese lifestyle and local hospitality.

The highlight of the tour was the hands-on mochi pounding (Mochitsuki) experience, where guests had the opportunity to pound glutinous rice using traditional wooden tools and shape it into soft, freshly made mochi. The perfect activity for travelers wanting a unique Japanese food experience.

Guests had the opportunity to customize their mochi with a variety of traditional fillings, including:
Anko (sweet red bean paste)
Natto (fermented soybeans)
Other traditional Japanese toppings
This activity is fun, educational, and ideal for families or groups looking for interactive Japanese cultural experiences. It offers a unique combination of culinary creativity and cultural learning, allowing participants to connect with Japanese traditions in a meaningful and memorable way.

After mochi making, The guests enjoyed a comforting homemade sukiyaki lunch specially prepared to meet their vegetarian preferences.
Our hosts can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, pescetarian, and allergy-friendly meals, making the experience welcoming for all types of travelers.

We understand that dietary needs and preferences are especially important for international travelers. Honey J ensures every meal is prepared carefully to provide a safe, delicious, and memorable Japanese food experience.
After the experience, our guide accompanied the family back to Ogoto Station, ensuring a safe and seamless departure. Along the way, the guide also took the time to answer any remaining questions and share final tips for exploring the area, providing thoughtful attention until the very end of the tour. This level of care ensures that every guest leaves with peace of mind and lasting memories of their day in Shiga.
From the first greeting to the final farewell, Honey J prioritizes guest comfort, safety, and satisfaction, ensuring every moment is smooth, memorable, and filled with genuine warmth. Our goal is not just to provide activities, but to create meaningful cultural connections moments that guests will remember long after they return home.
