You’ll be regaled with fascinating stories, and even meet some of our locals in shops that still retain the authentic atmosphere of days long past.

    In addition to visiting both tofu and miso shops to learn a bit about how these timeless food staples are made, this Takayama tour allows you to experience the goodness and artistry of “Wagashi” Japanese sweets and sample some local sake varieties that have been part of the Takayama food scene for generations. Learn about Takayama’s wonders through sight, sound and taste and experience what the locals know and love.

    Start your tour by visiting the morning market, where fresh seasonal produce and homemade products are sold. From there visit a local sake brewery and miso shop. We will take a coffee break at a venerable old house remodeled as a charming coffee shop.

    Sake Brewery

    The Hida district is brimming with abundant natural water sources, so it should come as no surprise that sake production is deeply rooted in local life. Try some sake at one of the many sake breweries dotting the area.

    Morning Market

    Having existed since the Edo period, this huge and bustling morning market continues the proud tradition of selling fresh seasonal vegetables and homemade products, their flavours each echoing the natural purity of long ago.

    Miso Shop

    Drop by a local miso shop. Miso is a seasoning made from fermented soy beans,wheat and rice. It plays a very important role among Japanese meals not only miso soup. In Takayama region, some locals still make their homemade miso, and enjoy the variety of recipes.

    Cafe

    For a coffee break, you can drop into a venerable old house remodeled as a charming coffee shop—that is, if you’re not full from eating so much along the way! These are just some of the wonderful things you have to look forward to during your quest to discover Takayama food for  yourself!

    The costs of taking a Kyudo lesson are usually very high. In this class, all the necessary equipment for Kyudo is prepared for you. All you need is passion and comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely!

    In this beginner-friendly experience, learn the practice of Kyudo. This includes learning about the proper form, as well as the tools and techniques used. Explore the history of Kyudo and gain a better understanding of this traditional martial art.

    Embark on an unforgettable adventure with our expert instructor, who may not speak flawless English but more than makes up for it with their passion and dedication. We provide top-notch English materials about the captivating art of Kyudo, ensuring a delightful experience as you bond with our teacher through the universal language of gestures and shared enthusiasm for this unique Japanese tradition.

    Please ask our teacher if you have any questions or doubts. He is very friendly and good at teaching Kyudo!

    Please note that our teacher provides hands-on guidance as he shows how to correctly take the proper stance and hold the bow.

    What do I need to bring?

    • Water bottles

    To reduce unnecessary waste we recommend you bring your water bottles. It’s for free to fill them up. We have a filtered drinking water dispenser by the reception. You can get fresh water before and after the tour, so you don’t need to buy any plastic bottles. We would appreciate your cooperation to reduce unnecessary plastic use.

    First, visit a refined, new concept supermarket run by a wholesaler greengrocer. Explore the rooftop vegetable farm where you can learn more about the flow of the Japanese seasons, the role of vegetables, and the connection to seasonal food.

    Next, stop by a vegetable restaurant that focuses on locally grown and locally consumed, SDG-friendly (Sustainable Development Goals) produce. Pick up some fresh produce for the sushi making class.

    Continue to Nishiki Market, a local market with over 400 years of history and the heart of Kyoto’s kitchen. Learn about the history, varieties and importance of local vegetable cultivation methods. You will shop for ingredients such as edible flowers, pickles and Konbu and then head to your sushi-making class.

    In the class, learn how to prepare sushi rice and shape your temari sushi using the fresh ingredients you bought during the tour. Create beautiful, Instagram-worthy sushi and enjoy it for an early dinner.
    Finally, you will receive a recipe so you can use the same techniques to recreate your temari sushi at home with locally sourced ingredients!
