Begin with an easy-to-understand lecture covering the basics of tatami, including its structure, materials, history, and role in Japanese daily life. The lecture is designed to be accessible and enjoyable, even for first-time visitors or those with no prior knowledge of Japanese culture.
After the lecture, enjoy a hands-on coaster-making session guided by a skilled tatami artisan.
Using authentic materials and tools, you will create your own tatami coaster to take home as a unique, handmade souvenir.
You will also have the opportunity to look around the tatami factory and observe real tatami makers machines!
An experience rarely available to visitors.
Feel free to ask questions and chat with your instructor, who is knowledgeable, approachable, and happy to share insights about tatami craftsmanship and Japanese culture.
After the workshop, guests may stroll around the nearby temples, including Konkai Kōmyō-ji Temple, located just in front of the workshop venue.
This sacred Buddhist temple complex features traditional wooden halls, historic statues, and beautifully landscaped gardens, making it a peaceful stop to enjoy Kyoto’s atmosphere before or after your experience.
