Discover the posture, breathing, and mindset that samurai and warriors valued. This program lets you enjoy a hands-on experience while getting into the mindsets of your favorite characters and classic samurai scenes. By adjusting your posture and breathing, you’ll experience a special moment where your mind calms and your focus sharpens. First-timers are absolutely welcome, and all instruction is provided in easy-to-understand English. People of all genders are welcome to participate. You will get to handle a real training katana (called “iaito”) to feel its weight and grip, and you will learn traditional martial arts manners, proper stance, and how to center yourself. Practice simple kata (forms) including drawing, striking, and sheathing the sword.
The workshop takes place at the animate Theater, a venue known for major stage productions. You’ll watch a performance demonstration by the instructor, and at the end, you’ll have a rare opportunity to perform the kata you’ve learned on a real stage set to music and sound effects! If you wish, you can wear a haori for a cosplay-style experience and film your performance.
