Japanese Calligraphy and Suminagashi in Osaka

Discover Japanese Calligraphy and Suminagashi in Osaka, where you’ll experience two traditional Japanese art forms in one workshop.

The experience combines Japanese calligraphy with Suminagashi, a traditional Japanese ink marbling technique in which ink is floated on water to create organic patterns that embrace the beauty of chance. When combined with calligraphy, each finished artwork becomes completely unique.

Your workshop begins by choosing a Kanji that reflects your feelings, a favorite season, or an animal you admire. With guidance from your instructor, you will practice writing the character while learning proper brush handling, stroke order, pressure and ink control. As you practice, you will naturally develop attention to detail and focus through thoughtful brush movements.

Once you are ready, you will write your chosen Kanji on the final sheet. While the ink dries, you will take a short break before moving on to Suminagashi. During the Suminagashi session, you will gently touch ink to the surface of water to create flowing patterns. You will also learn how to deepen the color or shape the patterns while exploring movement that complements your calligraphy.

At the end of the session, enjoy a cup of tea and chat with your instructor. All completed artworks can be taken home.
