Noh, one of the oldest performing arts in the world, has captivated audiences since the 14th century. At the heart of its unique sound is the Kotsuzumi, a small, hourglass-shaped shoulder drum that shapes the rhythms and atmosphere of performances. Crafted from cherry wood with black lacquer and gold accents, the drum uses horse skin drumheads held in place by hemp cords. Players adjust pitch by squeezing and releasing the cords while striking with the right hand.
In this experience, you will begin with an introduction to the Kotsuzumi and its significance in Noh, guided by a detailed book and slideshow, while guided by your guide. Then, enjoy a live demonstration by a master Kotsuzumi player. Afterward, practice the basics, learning how to hold the drum and perform different playing techniques. The session concludes with a Q&A and a photo opportunity to capture your experience.
