Archaeologists believe it was imported from China in the early 6th  century. Its origins are uncertain, but taiko has played an important role in  Japanese culture for thousands of years. Taiko drums have been used for a variety of purposes throughout history, and are available in many different sizes and shapes. They were once an important military tool that was used for communicating, motivating and even intimidating troops. In kabuki and kagura performances, they often create everything from dramatic tension to a peaceful tempo. Often used as part of rituals and festivals in Japanese religions, their significance is undeniable. Throughout history, taiko has become an important symbol for  Japan and its traditional culture. It is an ancient art that just keeps evolving.
