THE VENUE: Historic Elegance at the Furukawa Art Museum in Nagoya

At a Glance

To step onto the grounds of the Furukawa Art Museum is to cross a threshold into Nagoya’s refined history. You enter a world regulated by a completely different concept of time. In particular, Honey J Travel grants travelers exclusive access to a private kimono and tea experience at the Tamesaburo Memorial Museum. This space feels heavily weighted with authentic cultural heritage.

Furthermore, this venue operates far away from the frantic rush of mainstream tourist corridors. It functions not as a superficial photo studio, but as a genuine living cultural property designed for quiet immersion.

The Tamesaburo Memorial Museum & Heritage Gardens

The Tamesaburo Memorial Museum acts as an intentional counter-space to Nagoya’s hyper-accelerated metropolitan lifestyle. Stepping off the bustling city streets into these serene spaces provides a startling, beautiful contrast.

According to Kawamoto-sama, the heritage garden offers exceptional photography spots for guests. The most breathtaking backdrops are located where the historic main building, the traditional tea room, and the classic wooden gates naturally frame your kimono silhouette. This experience demonstrates perfectly that Edo-period aesthetics are not static museum pieces bound to the past, but an active, living environment.

  • Capture Timeless Memories
Take advantage of Kawamoto-sama’s expert eye for composition. She guides guests to the most breathtaking vantage points in the Tamesaburo Memorial Museum garden, where the architecture naturally frames your kimono silhouette.

A Private Oasis Away from the Tourist Crowds

Unlike crowded public shrines, this sanctuary offers intimate, atmospheric elegance. For the tea portion of your experience, the museum provides matcha that is freshly whisked upon order, served alongside seasonal Japanese sweets (Omogashi).

You will enjoy your tea in museum-grade bowls crafted by artists deeply connected to the Furukawa Art Museum. These extraordinary pieces feature celebrated regional craftsmanship, including exquisite Seto ware, Mino ware, and intricate glass art. For guests concerned about sitting on the floor, the museum has a proven track record of providing comfortable chair and bench seating, ensuring total relaxation.

Private Nagoya Kimono Heritage vs. One-Size-Fits-All Tourist Rentals

和装 Wasou — Historically, wearing traditional Japanese garments was an art of grace and personal dignity, not a rushed or uncomfortable process. Today, many commercial tourist shops prioritize volume over comfort, squeezing guests into restrictive, one-size-fits-all garments just to wander through heavily crowded streets. This private session fundamentally shifts that dynamic. Rooted in the philosophy of “Universal Wasou,” Kawamoto-sama ensures that whether you are exceptionally tall or require specific sizing accommodations, you are dressed with profound respect and expertise tailored specifically to your body.

Furthermore, engaging with a certified master dresser within the exclusive grounds of the Tamesaburo Memorial Museum recovers a rare authenticity. This is not a superficial photo op on a busy public sidewalk. Here, you are granted the quiet time and sacred space to fully embody the elegance of the garment. Paired with freshly whisked matcha served in historic regional ceramics, your private participation becomes a genuine immersion into Nagoya’s refined heritage rather than a mere commercial transaction.

CULTURAL FOUNDATION: The Art of Universal Wasou & Authentic Matcha

The true luxury of this Nagoya experience lies in its absolute commitment to accessibility and authenticity. By combining a progressive approach to traditional garments with a deeply historic tea service, this session removes the common physical barriers that often prevent international travelers from fully enjoying Japanese culture. For many international visitors, the greatest hesitation when booking a kimono experience is sizing. Kawamoto-sama established Universal Wasou (ユニバーサル和装) in 2020 to eliminate these exact worries. Her philosophy is simple: the elegance of a kimono belongs to absolutely everyone, regardless of nationality, age, or gender.

The Bespoke Difference: Universal Wasou vs. Commercial Rentals

Universal Sizing & Comfort

All Heights • 全てのサイズ

Whether you are male, female, exceptionally tall, or require a wider fit, Kawamoto-sama possesses the expertise and the inventory to accommodate you perfectly. Through her mastery of Universal Sizing, she frequently and beautifully styles international travelers of all proportions visiting Nagoya. To ensure a flawless and comfortable fit, guests are simply asked to provide their height and standard everyday clothing size prior to their arrival. This bespoke preparation guarantees that you spend your time fully immersed in the Tamesaburo Memorial Museum’s heritage gardens, not adjusting an ill-fitting garment.

Artisan Matcha & Ceramics

Freshly Whisked • 本格抹茶

Following your stroll, the tea service is curated and provided directly by the Furukawa Art Museum. Unlike high-volume tourist tea ceremonies, each bowl of matcha is meticulously and freshly whisked only after you have ordered it. You will hold exquisite, museum-grade local ceramics such as historic Seto ware, Mino ware, or striking glass art pieces. Furthermore, the museum readily provides comfortable chair and bench seating, ensuring you can fully immerse yourself in the flavors without the physical strain of traditional floor seating.

Freshly Whisked Matcha and Seasonal Sweets

Following your stroll through the Tamesaburo Memorial Museum gardens, you will be invited to partake in a sensory masterpiece. The tea service is curated and provided directly by the Furukawa Art Museum.

Unlike high-volume tourist tea ceremonies where drinks are pre-made in bulk, your matcha here is treated with profound respect. Each bowl is meticulously and freshly whisked only after you have ordered it, ensuring the perfect temperature, froth, and depth of flavor.

This tea is accompanied by a delicate seasonal Japanese sweet known as an Omogashi (主菓子). In traditional tea culture, the Omogashi is the “main sweet” served to guests of honor. These confections are meticulously hand-crafted to reflect Japan’s fleeting micro-seasons. Whether the design mimics a blooming plum blossom in late winter or a glistening hydrangea in the summer rain, the sweet is meant to visually ground you in the exact moment of your visit.

Enjoyed just before drinking, the refined profile of the Omogashi perfectly balances the rich, earthy umami of the premium green tea, completing a centuries-old sensory ritual.

Artisan Ceramics: Seto Ware, Mino Ware, and Glass Art

Your tea is not just a drink; it is a tactile connection to the region’s artistic lineage. Nagoya and its surrounding prefectures (Aichi and Gifu) are globally renowned for their historic kilns.

During your session, your matcha will be served in museum-grade artisan bowls crafted by artists closely associated with the Furukawa Art Museum. Depending on the season and the master’s selection, you will hold exquisite local ceramics such as historic Seto ware or Mino ware, or even striking, contemporary glass art pieces. This transforms a simple cup of tea into an interactive art appreciation experience.

Chair & Bench Accommodations

The traditional Japanese posture of sitting on one’s knees (seiza) can be incredibly painful for those who are not accustomed to it, often ruining what should be a peaceful tea ceremony. In perfect alignment with Kawamoto-sama’s mission of universal comfort, the Furukawa Art Museum offers full accommodations for guests who prefer not to sit on the floor. With a proven track record of hosting diverse international guests, the museum readily provides comfortable chairs and benches. You can fully immerse yourself in the flavors of the matcha and the beauty of the traditional chashitsu (tea room) architecture without any physical strain or distraction.

THE MASTER'S HERITAGE: Pioneering Inclusive Kimono Culture

From Systems Engineer to Kimono Master

To sit across from Kawamoto-sama is to engage with a master whose life experience bridges modern innovation with classical tradition. Born in Chiba Prefecture in 1963, her path to traditional dressing is incredibly unique. After graduating from Meiji University in 1985, she spent approximately 20 years working as a computer programmer and systems engineer within the electronics, IT, and automotive sectors.

During her demanding corporate career, she managed to take two childcare leaves—a pioneering and highly unusual achievement at the time—allowing her to seamlessly continue her professional trajectory. However, driven by a deep, vocational calling to communicate the profound charm of traditional Japanese garments, she eventually pivoted her career toward entrepreneurship. This rich background in navigating complex systems and advocating for personal balance translates directly into her meticulous, compassionate approach to kimono dressing today.

Breaking Barriers: The Birth of Universal Wasou

In 2020, Kawamoto-sama officially launched “Universal Wasou”. Her overarching mission is to offer kimono experiences and dressing classes that can be enjoyed by absolutely everyone, regardless of nationality, age, or gender.

Her technical authority is backed by a rigorous progression of certifications. She became a certified Yamano Ryu Okuden Instructor in 2020, achieved the title of Universal Kimono Dresser® in 2023, and holds a certification as a Bridal Dresser for 2026. Yet, despite this high level of mastery, she explicitly avoids chasing media appearances or celebrity clientele. Instead, she dedicates her expertise entirely to everyday guests, ensuring that your private session in Nagoya is grounded in genuine hospitality and unwavering attention to detail.

“We deliver a kimono experience that anyone can enjoy, regardless of nationality, age, or gender—designed from the ground up for true universal comfort.”
