The Kyo-Yuzen Dyeing Experience in Kyoto introduces you to a traditional craft that began around 350 years ago in the Genroku era, founded by Yuzensai Miyazaki, who originally painted designs on fans. Known for its bright and beautiful colors, Kyo-Yuzen is one of Kyoto’s proud cultural contributions to the world.
This experience focuses on Surikomi Yuzen, a type of stencil Yuzen technique. Using stencils and brushes, you will dye large textile items such as furoshiki, split curtains (noren) or tapestries. The result is a decorative piece that can be taken home and used to enrich your living space with authentic Yuzen patterns and designs.
After completion, you can take your finished item home the same day. Participants are also instructed on how to iron their finished piece at home to set the dye properly, with specific temperature guidance depending on material type.
