Kintsugi Experience Overview

Kintsugi is a traditional Japanese technique for repairing broken or chipped vessels. This art form has recently gained worldwide attention, extending beyond Japan. While many Kintsugi methods exist, the technique introduced in this class is the most classic and essential Kintsugi method, using 100% natural materials and traditional Japanese “Urushi” lacquer. Explore the traditional methods of Kintsugi at HIROKI Kyoto.

At our workshop, we practice traditional kintsugi using classical techniques. The authentic kintsugi process consists of six main steps, and completing a single piece can take several months. For this reason, in this experience, participants will focus on Step 6: kin-maki (gold sprinkling), which is considered the highlight of the kintsugi process. In addition, under the concept of “returning to the earth,” we introduce the full kintsugi restoration process and its history, while sharing the beauty of traditional culture that HIROKI has studied and practiced through over 50 years of lacquerware restoration. Through slides and videos, we also explore questions and challenges facing modern society.

Inside the workshop, guests can view the muro (a drying chamber for lacquer), vessels in the process of restoration, and completed kintsugi works. Heian Kyoto-style kintsugi is a sustainable restoration technique that uses only 100% natural materials, such as pure urushi lacquer and Japanese lacquer powders. Through videos and slides (English) you will also learn about the history and process of Kintsugi, as well as the characteristics of Urushi and the manufacturing process. The skilled team trained by HIROKI will guide you through the entire process helping you gain a deeper understanding of both Kintsugi and lacquer restoration!
